Are You Happy With Your Career?

by | Candidate Advice

Lets be honest, careers are weird.6% of us have held onto the career aspirations we had as children. The other 94% of us are making it up as we go along. Literally! On average we will experiment with 10-15 different roles in our lifetime.

No ones career path is plain sailing, but the question is, are you happy with the path you’re on?

Lets find out…

1. Are you happy with your progression?

  • Are colleagues progressing quicker than you?
  • Does it feel like your hard work is unrewarded?
  • Have you missed out on a promotion you thought you deserved?

If you answer yes to any of these, it’s time to ask why. And if you don’t know the answer it might be worth talking to your boss.

Seriously! Setting up a meeting could lead to great things. It will show your boss your serious about your progression at work. You could both talk through issues, then set up a plan to help you reach your goals. Or it could confirm that progression isn’t going to happen any time soon. Either way you’ll be better off.

2. Are you happy with the company and it’s product/service?

There are two types of people in this world. The people who spend weeks searching for the perfect role in the perfect company. And the people who stumbled into their careers, not entirely sure how they landed there.

If you’re the latter (as most people are!) are you happy with the company you’ve ended up in, and the product/service it provides? After all, it’s almost impossible to do a great job when you don’t believe in what you’re doing.

3. Are you happy with the challenge?

Wether you fall into the underworked or overworked category, neither is much fun.

Some people are all about living for the weekend, but as you spend the majority of your time at work, shouldn’t you be doing something you enjoy?

Don’t make any drastic decisions yet though! Have a word with your boss see if it’s possible to boost or ease your challenges. If that’s not possible, then maybe it’s time to consider looking elsewhere.

4. Are you happy with the opportunities available?

  • Have all the staff been there for years with no signs of leaving?
  • Has the company created any new roles recently?
  • Is it a very small organisation?

Even if you’re in the perfect job you could soon outgrow it if you’ve already reached the top of the ladder.

Again, we always recommend talking to your boss and show your keenness. But if there really are no options it might be time to start looking for some companies with taller ladders.

5. Would you be happier somewhere else?

Sometimes the grass really is just greener on the other side…

So if you’re not happy with where your career path is taking you – do something about it!
